We welcome the decision taken at the G20 hosted by India to admit the African Union as a permanent member, a cause we have long supported.
With a seat at the table, Africa, a continent that is home to nearly a fifth of the world's population, can play its role in an inclusive global agenda.
This decision marks an important step towards addressing the current multilateral system's longstanding shortcomings. It is part of the reforms the continent called for again recently at the Africa Climate Summit.
We thank the leaders of our continent for pushing this agenda, and in particular President Macky Sall, the former African Union Chairperson, who set the ball rolling.
