NGN webinars

The Mo Ibrahim Foundation’s webinars provided an opportunity to learn more about the Foundation’s work in an interactive format. Each webinar included one or more short presentations and a Q&A session where questions from the audience were picked up and answered live.

A Governance in focus series began in February 2023 with the aim to disseminate the key findings from the 2022 Ibrahim Index of African Governance (IIAG) and to bridge the data-policy gap via discussing with audiences how to read the IIAG results, how to conduct analysis using the IIAG online data portal, and how results contextualise the reality on the ground.

Financing Africa: where is the money? Leveraging Africa's potential resources

This third session of the webinar series on Financing Africa will unpack key results from the 2024 NGN survey on exploring Africa’s potential to leverage its own resources. Besides focusing on crucial issues such as monetising green assets, foreign direct investment and domestic resource mobilisation, the discussion will also be an opportunity to unpack key recommendations from the perspective of Africa’s youth.

Financing Africa: where is the money? Assessing the current supply from non-African partners (bilateral, multilateral, private)

This second session of the webinar series on Financing Africa will unpack key results from the 2024 NGN survey on assessing the supply of financial resources to the continent. Besides focusing on crucial issues such as debt servicing or the global financial architecture, the discussion will also be an opportunity to unpack key recommendations from the perspective of Africa’s youth.

Financing Africa: where is the money? Assessing Africa’s needs

This webinar series is dedicated to the theme of Financing Africa and is composed of three sessions:

  • Assessing Africa’s sustainable development needs.
  • Evaluate the resources the continent receives from partners.
  • Exploring how Africa can leverage its own wealth to bridge its financial gap.

Based on key findings from the 2024 NGN survey of over a hundred African young experts on Africa’s financing agenda, the webinar will serve as a platform to discuss youth perspectives and recommendations.

First Ten-Year Implementation Plan (FTYIP) for Agenda 2063 (2014-2023)

The African Union’s (AU) Agenda 2063 is the continent’s strategic framework for transforming Africa from 2013 to 2063. Its implementation is divided into five Ten-Year Implementation Plans. 2023 marked the end of the First Ten-Year Implementation Plan (FTYIP).

This webinar will discuss perceptions of progress during the decade covered by the FTYIP (2014-2023), as well as key longstanding data gaps when it comes to measuring implementation. It will also serve as a reflection on key takeaways from the 37th AU Summit (17-18 February in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia).

2024: Year of Elections in Africa

2024 is a massive year for Elections in Africa but also the world. Around a third of African countries will participate in or experience an election in the next twelve months including some of Africa’s most stable democracies and economies. This webinar will delve into what this means for those countries and the continent.

Key themes will include the importance of free & fair elections, role of the youth in African politics and the implications for Africa.

Governance in focus: Towards gender equality in Africa: data, challenges and opportunities

This webinar will focus on the significant improvements in Women's Equality, a standout sub-category of the IIAG 2022, which achieved a record score of 55.0 out of 100.0 in 2021. Since 2012, 42 African countries have seen increased political and socio-economic gender equality.

Despite this progress, which is linked to legal and institutional reforms, significant barriers to full participation remain, including high levels of violence against women and limited socio-economic prospects. This webinar aims to assess the IIAG 2022 results in this area and discuss the key priorities and policy responses needed to close the gender gap, with a focus on economic and political empowerment.

Governance in focus: What does Africa expect from COP28?

This webinar will discuss the main priorities and expectations of the African people from COP28. The webinar will also discuss the main challenges facing the continent in progress towards achieving the Paris Climate Agreement goals. It will showcase some findings from our upcoming publication on Africa’s Road to COP28

Governance in focus: Data for Development in Africa

This webinar will be a discussion about the state of data progress in Africa. It will involve an assessment of the main challenges around data on the continent and how these affect the achievement of Agenda 2063 goals and the SDGs. The webinar will also discuss the key priorities required to improve data progress for development in Africa.

Governance in focus: Africa’s progress towards the SDGs

This webinar will be a debate taking stock of Africa’s progress against the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in 2023 – a key year marking the halfway point towards realising the ambitious global development agenda. Additionally, it will shed light on key data gaps when it comes to measuring the implementation of the 2030 Agenda.

Governance in focus: Security & Rule of Law

This webinar will examine the performance of Security & Rule of Law in the 2022 Ibrahim Index of African Governance (IIAG). Despite being the second highest scoring IIAG category in 2021, it has experienced the largest deterioration between 2012 and 2021. Ben Crumpton, Researcher at the Mo Ibrahim Foundation, will pay special attention to Security and Safety, the most declined of the IIAG’s 16 sub-categories. A guest speaker tbc will respond to the presentation, and the session will conclude with a Q&A.

Governance in Africa: Global Africa

In this webinar, Tracy Kituyi, MIF Scholar at University of Birmingham will moderate a debate between two NGN members: Hanan Taifour, Office of the Vice President for Private Sector, Infrastructure and Industrialisation, AfDB, and Mike Mpanya, Co-founder, Igwele.

Governance in focus: Participation, Rights & Inclusion 2022 key findings

This webinar will discuss the main findings from the Participation, Rights & Inclusion category of the 2022 IIAG. Hoodo Richter, MIF researcher, is joined by Manji Wilson, NGN member and an elections, governance and policy expert who has provided support to key election stakeholders as well as regional election management bodies on the African continent. Their discussion will be followed by a Q&A session.

Governance in focus: harnessing the power of data to meet Africa’s development goals

Diego Fernandez Fernandez, Senior Analyst in MIF’s research team, and Karen Bett, Senior Policy Manager - Data Equity and Inclusion at the Global Partnership for Sustainable Development Data will discuss the role of data to meet Africa's development goals: progress so far and longstanding data gaps.

Governance in focus: regional integration & the AfCFTA

Ben Chandler, Senior Researcher in MIF’s research team, presents the economic findings from the 2022 IIAG, with a focus on what this means for trade and the success of the African Continental Free Trade Area.

Ma Soukha Ba, a member of MIF’s Now Generation Network (NGN) and a senior private sector development specialist, provides an expert perspective on the topics presented.

Governance in focus: IIAG Health results & COVID-19

Diego Fernandez Fernandez, Senior Analyst in MIF’s research team, presents the Health findings from the 2022 IIAG, as well as looking at the IIAG data through the lens of COVID-19.

Fatou Wurie, member of MIF’s Now Generation Network (NGN) and a DrPH student at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, provides an expert perspective on the topics presented.
