Mo Ibrahim and the NGN discuss the role of youth in shaping Africa’s future

A virtual discussion between Mo Ibrahim and members of the Now Generation Network (NGN) brought together participants from across the continent and the diaspora, including new members following the network’s recent expansion. The session focussed on governance challenges in Africa and the role of younger generations in addressing them. 

Mo described the continent as facing persistent instability, citing ongoing conflicts and a resurgence of military coups. He argued that these trends reflect a broader failure of leadership and governance, while emphasising that young Africans are better educated and more connected than previous generations, placing them in a position to drive change. 

The discussion covered other four main themes. First, the shifting global landscape, with a weakening international order increasing pressure on African countries and reinforcing the need for stronger continental coordination. Second, financing development, with an emphasis on mobilising domestic resources and addressing structural financial leakages. 

Third, governance and leadership, highlighting the dual challenge of weak institutions and limited effective leadership. Finally, the role of young people, focussing on collective organisation, political participation, and the importance of independent, cross-border networks.
