New research brief - 2024 African Elections

18 December, 2024

On Wednesday, 18 December, the Mo Ibrahim Foundation released a new research brief, Reviewing Africa's 2024 Election Year. This document provides a review of the 2024 African election year with an analysis of the governance performance based on the latest IIAG (Ibrahim Index of African Governance), offering in-depth reflections on the democratic landscape across the continent, focussing on the countries that held elections this year.

In February, we published 2024: Africa's 'Ultimate' Election Year, which looked forward to a historic election year for Africa. Now, we are presenting a new perspective on the data and narratives in our latest publication. Within this brief, we cover:

  • the outcomes of 13 elections across Africa

  • declining governance trends in Participation & Rights

  • opposition victories.
