A Transformative Journey: Terfa Ashwe's experience with the Mo Ibrahim Fellowship at ITC
15 October, 2024
The Mo Ibrahim Fellowship is far more than just a professional engagement—it is a journey of personal growth, skill development, and meaningful contribution to the global community. Among the many impactful experiences, one stands out as particularly memorable: the 60th Anniversary of the International Trade Centre (ITC). This milestone event was a powerful reminder of the critical role that small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) play in shaping resilient, thriving, and innovative societies. Being part of this celebration was not only an honour but also a moment that underscored the broader impact that dedicated work and strategic initiatives can have on a global scale.
ITC’s 60th Anniversary: “Transforming Trade, Changing Lives
The highlight of my Fellowship has undeniably been the 60th Anniversary of the ITC. This event was more than a celebration of six decades of achievements; it was a vital opportunity to emphasize the crucial role of MSMEs in the global economy. MSMEs are often the backbone of economies, particularly in developing countries, driving innovation, creating jobs, and fostering sustainable growth. The event provided a platform to explore how these enterprises can be further supported, especially during times of global uncertainty.
My role in contributing to this event allowed me to witness the passion and commitment of various stakeholders—from government officials to business leaders and international organizations. It was a profound experience to see how our collective efforts could draw attention to the challenges and opportunities facing MSMEs and to recognize that our work could inspire policy changes and new initiatives aimed at empowering these vital enterprises. The sense of accomplishment and purpose I felt during this event is something I will carry with me throughout my career.
Unique Opportunities and Skills Gained
The Fellowship offered a distinctive blend of opportunities that helped me develop essential skills in leadership and management. These three pillars were not just theoretical concepts but were deeply integrated into every aspect of the program.
Leadership: Working in the Cabinet of the Executive Director, Pamela Coke-Hamilton, under the guidance of Dorothy Tembo and the tutelage of the Chef de Cabinet allowed me to observe and understand leadership in action. I got the unique opportunity to work with a leadership team that believed and drove the organization based on human-centred values, and who were able to inspire and empower others to reach their full potential. Each member of the leadership team never missed the opportunity to recognise the importance and value of their contributions to the overall vision for the organization. Celebrating diversity and inclusion and the transformative power of a common and collective vision, appreciating that leadership is not merely about giving directions.
Management: The Fellowship also provided a comprehensive introduction to management practices, particularly in the context of international organizations. I was involved in managing projects, budgets, and timelines, which gave me a practical understanding of how to balance multiple priorities while ensuring that objectives were met. This experience was invaluable, teaching me how to think strategically, plan effectively, adapt to changing circumstances and partner—all skills essential for any aspiring leader.
Making a Meaningful Impact
One of the most rewarding aspects of the Fellowship was the opportunity to work on projects that had a tangible impact on the community and society. Whether through capacity-building workshops, policy advocacy, or partnerships with businesses, I felt that our work was making a real difference in the lives of entrepreneurs and their communities.
