About us
Strengthening the African voice on global challenges.

Our story
Founded in 2006 by Mo Ibrahim and solely funded by him to this day, the Mo Ibrahim Foundation is a non-grant making, African organisation.
The Foundation is based on the belief that Africa, rich in resources and potential, has been held back by governance and leadership challenges that must be addressed to unlock its full prosperity.
The Foundation was established to define, assess, and enhance sound leadership and governance in Africa as key enablers of the continent’s progress, with a specific focus on Africa’s youth, as main stakeholders of their own continent.

Our mission
The Mo Ibrahim Foundation is an African organisation providing an African voice on current global challenges, grounded in sound leadership and governance.
The Foundation provides data and data-led analysis to assess these challenges at the continental level, bringing together stakeholders from Africa and beyond, including Africa’s youth, to discuss potential solutions.
Our initiatives and programmes inform discussions, convene stakeholders, and foster Africa’s young leaders.

Our work
To address Africa’s governance challenges, foster leadership, and map a path for the continent’s progress, the Foundation collaborates with leading organisations from Africa and beyond, bringing together stakeholders from across government, academia, private sector, and civil society.

To help deliver necessary change and overcome these challenges, the Foundation:
Informs discussions
Through data and data-led analysis, the Foundation ensures that debates are informed by the most relevant, up-to-date research.
Convenes stakeholders
The Foundation brings together key stakeholders from across Africa and beyond to discuss the continent’s most pressing issues and deliver tangible, practical solutions.
Fosters Africa’s young leaders
The Foundation provides resources and support to Africa’s majority – its youth – to move the development agenda forward.
We do this through several initiatives and programmes, such as:
- Our research, including the Ibrahim Index of African Governance (IIAG), the annual Forum Report and topical research briefs.
- Events such as the annual Ibrahim Governance Weekend and online debates.
- Fellowships, Scholarships and the Now Generation Network.
Our people
With a small secretariat, the Foundation relies on the advice of a broad range of diverse experts in African affairs, with eminent leaders from government, multilateral organisations, academia, and the private sector, at both African and global levels.
