Mo Ibrahim Foundation announces no winner of the 2023 Ibrahim Prize for Achievement in African Leadership

The independent Prize Committee has announced that there will be no winner of the 2023 Ibrahim Prize for Achievement in African Leadership. This prize is awarded to exceptional candidates who meet rigorous selection criteria for excellence, but it's not necessarily awarded every year. This marks the third consecutive year that the Prize has not been awarded, as there were no candidates who met the rigorous selection criteria.

The Prize Committee acknowledges and applauds the outstanding contributions that many African leaders have made to improve their countries in recent years. To discuss the awarding of the Ibrahim Prize, the committee holds several meetings each year.

Since its launch in 2006, the Ibrahim Prize has been awarded seven times. The previous Laureates are Mahamadou Issoufou of Niger (2020), Ellen Johnson Sirleaf of Liberia (2017), President Hifikepunye Pohamba of Namibia (2014), President Pedro Pires of Cabo Verde (2011), President Festus Mogae of Botswana (2008), and President Joaquim Chissano of Mozambique (2007). Nelson Mandela was the inaugural Honorary Laureate in 2007.
