Mary Robinson appointed United Nations Special Envoy on El Nino and Climate

Mary Robinson, MIF Board and Prize Committee Member, has been appointed by the United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, to serve as the United Nations Special Envoy on El Niño and Climate.

Along with Macharia Kamau of Kenya, the two will provide the leadership required to tackle challenges of drought and flooding associated with El Niño as well as the increasing impact of climate change on the poorest communities, raising the profile and sounding the alarm.

Ms Robinson is currently President of the Mary Robinson Foundation – Climate Justice. She was the President of Ireland and recently served as Special Envoy of the Secretary-General for Climate Change with John Kufuor and Michael Bloomberg. She has also served as Special Envoy of the Secretary-General for the Great Lakes Region.

Mr Kamau is the Permanent Representative of Kenya to the United Nations. He is also a former President of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) Board.
